UAG golf day sees big turnout

A LARGE number of enthusiastic golfers turned up to take part in the first annual United Africa Group (UAG) corporate golf challenge recently.

A total of 21 teams, which included players from Walvis Bay, Swakopmund as well as a guest appearance from young South African amateur team player Stacey Bregman, pitted their skills on the sprawling Windhoek Country Club Golf course throughout the day. The four-ball Alliance challenge, with no scramble and two scores to count, was won by the Ministry of Defence team, who walked off with a host of prizes including two nights at any Protea Hotel in Namibia.A lucky draw established the remainder of the prize winners, which saw many of the players receive hampers, Protea Hotel gold cards and holidays courtesy of Protea Hotels.Andrew Dodds, chief executive officer of JAC Agency, achieved the longest drive, while Glen de Waal won the prize for the ‘nearest to the pin.’ A three-litre bottle of red wine signed by top rugby player Schalk Burger was auctioned off at the prize giving, with proceeds going towards the Rotary Meals on Wheels charity project, also supported by Protea Fuerstenhof. The wine received a top bid of N$8 500 from Wolfram Jauss, Group Financial Manager of Democratic Media Holdings, on behalf of the DMH Group, which was represented by a team from the Republikein newspaper. This offer was topped up by Haddis Tilahun, Executive Director of the United Africa Group, who rounded off the figure to N$10 000 for this worthwhile cause.Tilahun expressed his delight at the success of the day.”The United Africa Group Golf Challenge has been strongly supported by some of the country’s top companies and entrepreneurs, and we would like to thank them for taking time off to spend with us,” said Tilahun, adding that he plans to turn the golf day into an annual event.Other sponsors on the day included SMC Brands, Distell Namibia, Budget Rent-A-Car and House of Wines.
