Two Rundu police officers arrested for alleged smuggling

Two police officers from Rundu were arrested this week after they allegedly attempted to smuggle money, cannabis, cigarettes and mobile phones into police holding cells.

The arrests were confirmed by Kavango East regional police commander commissioner Andreas Haingura on Wednesday.

According to Haingura, the suspects are a constable and a sergeant.

“They are charged with contravening Section 43 of the Anti-Corruption Act, possession of cannabis, and contraventions of Sections 16 and 17 of the Tobacco Products Control Act of 2010,” Haingura said.

He explained that the constable was arrested on Tuesday at the Rundu Police Station, while the sergeant was apprehended at the Rundu Magistrate’s Court.

The latest arrests add to a growing list of cases in which police officers have been implicated in criminal activities.

Earlier this week, police national spokesperson deputy commissioner Kauna Shikwambi confirmed that three police officers from the Hardap region were arrested on Sunday for allegedly stealing a sheep carcass and two bags of intestines valued at N$2 000 at Aranos.

The stolen money was later recovered.
