REHOBOTH – Two men arrested for the alleged rape of a 22-year-old woman at Rehoboth last month, made their second appearance in the Rehoboth Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, where they were denied bail.
Simon Simon and Taba Kavela appeared before magistrate Desmond Beukes on a charge of rape, and their case was postponed to 18 April 2019 for further investigations.
The victim was allegedly raped around 04h00 on 15 February at a house in Block E.
The incident was, however, only reported to the police on 22 February.
Police reports indicated that the victim and her friends were in the company of the two suspects at a local club. The three thereafter went to the house of one of the suspects, where she was reportedly overpowered and raped by the two men.
Public prosecutor Victor Mutumbulwa opposed the granting of bail as investigations are still in the early stages, and because Kavela already has a similar charge pending against him. He indicated that the defence lawyers had applied for a formal bail hearing.
Simon was represented by Ernstine Jansen, while Kavela was represented by Christopher Stanley.
The accused are being held at the Rehoboth Police holding cells.
In an unrelated case also at Rehoboth, a 32-year-old man arrested for possessing and dealing in dependence-producing substances on 22 February this year made his third appearance in the Rehoboth Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.
The accused, Christopher Leppen, also appeared before magistrate Beukes on two counts of possession of drugs and dealing in dependence-producing substances.
His case was postponed to 6 May for further investigations, and for the laboratory results to be released.
The arrest took place at the accused’s residence in Block F. He was denied bail, and was likewise remanded in custody at the Rehoboth Police holding cells.
Leppen indicated that he would conduct his own defence.
Public prosecutor Zibiho Munzenze represented the state in the latter matter. – Nampa
