Two more bronze medals for Namibia at AAG

KINTELE – Lahja Ishitile and Tjipekapora Herunga won two more bronze medals for Namibia at the 11th All Africa Games (AAG) underway in Brazzaville, Republic of Congo.

Ishitile, who has a visual impairment, finished third in the T11 200m race, setting a personal best time of 26,26 seconds. Her time qualified her for the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Summer Paralympic Games. She also qualified for Rio in the T11 100m.

She joins Ananias Shikongo and Moses Tobias, also T11 sprinters, for the Summer Paralympic Games set for Brazil from 7-18 September 2016. Ishitile ran with guide David Ndeilenge.

Herunga, an able-bodied athlete, won a bronze medal in the 400m final for women. She finished in a time of 51,55 seconds.

Meanwhile, Namibia stands a chance of winning another bronze medal because the Nigerian 4x100m men’s relay, which ended second overall in that race, crossed the exchange zone at the last point of exchange.

The Nigerians were disqualified but they protested and this prevented the publishing of the results. By midday on Wednesday, the final results were not yet released.

The 4×100 men’s relay final took place on Tuesday evening, and saw Namibia finishing fourth behind Zambia, Nigeria (second) and Ivory Coast (first).

The Namibian team consisted of Jesse Uri-khob, Hitjivirue Kaanjuka, Even Tjiviju and Dantago Gurirab.

Namibia has so far won eight medals – one gold, two silver and five bronze medals at the 11th All Africa Games.

At the 2011 AAG held in Maputo, Mozambique, Namibia came back with seven medals – one gold, one silver and five bronze.
