Two killed in speeding car in Windhoek

TWO men were killed and another lost a leg after the vehicle they were travelling in crashed into a pole along Hosea Kutako Drive in Windhoek at about 04h35 on Saturday morning.

Police identified the deceased as Lesley Damien Carew (23), who was driving, and Desmond Coetzee (34), who was a passenger. Another passenger, Ciby Leprino (18) lost a leg in the crash.

According to a police report, Carew was allegedly speeding and lost control of the vehicle, causing it to ram into a street light and breaking into parts.

Their next of kin have been informed.

In another road accident, 43-year-old Ananias Ndapulomo Naanyukwe was killed on Friday after he was hit by a truck while cycling at Okahandja.

In an unrelated incident, a 32-year-old soldier at the Suiderhof military base in Windhoek was arrested and charged with attempted murder after he allegedly shot and wounded a 32-year-old man on the left side of his head with a 7.65 mm pistol on Friday.

The victim sustained serious injuries, and has been admitted to the Katutura Intermediate Hospital.

The victim allegedly bumped into the suspect’s vehicle as he reversed at a shebeen, resulting in the shooting.

The suspect is expected to appear in court tomorrow.

Also in Windhoek on Friday, two people were robbed in Katutura and Pionierspark, respectively.

A 27-year-old woman was robbed at gunpoint after two men broke into her house in Efesiers Street in Katutura while she was sleeping.

The robbers allegedly instructed her to cover her face with a blanket. They stole a smartphone, N$8 800 in cash, a television set, two digital cameras and memory sticks all valued at N$40 000. No arrest has been made, and nothing has been recovered yet.

A man was also robbed of a bag containing N$30 000 and documents by an unknown man who smashed the left window of his car as he was turning into his home in Bruhn street, Pionierspark.

According to the police report, the victim chased the robber, who got into a blue Ford Ranger with no number plate and sped off. No arrests have been made, and nothing has been recovered.

Police have appealed to anyone with information about the robberies to contact deputy commissioner Agas on 0811242649.
