Two arrested over alleged child marriage attempt in Kavango West

Two people were arrested on Monday after allegedly attempting to arrange a child marriage in the Kavango West region.

The arrangement was allegedly taking place between May and August in Ncaute village, Ncuncuni constituency.

Kavango West police chief inspector Raimbert Muronga says the male suspect approached the victim’s mother requesting her 14-year-old daughter’s hand in marriage through traditional customs.

“The suspect allegedly promised to support the minor’s educational needs, leading the mother to agree to the arrangement and authorise her daughter to reside at the suspect’s home,” says Muronga.

The suspects include a 26-year-old Angolan male cattle herder and the 41-year-old mother of the victim, who has been charged as an accomplice in the case.
