THE Windhoek City Police has apprehended 12 members of the notorious ‘Kwateni Om’ Nona gang, who have been terrorising residents in the Goreangab and Greenwell Matongo areas in recent months.
The gang has been robbing the belongings of children on their way to school, and adults, especially women, en route to their places of work in the early morning hours.
‘Kwateni Om’ Nona is an Oshiwambo phrase loosely translated to ‘Catch her’.
“The entire group is here at our office, the ones who terrorise Eveline Street,” said City Police spokesperson, superintendent Cillie Auala, during a media briefing on Friday.
She said the arrest of the group on Thursday was made possible through footage from closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras along the infamous Eveline Street.
The City Police arrested two other gangsters about two months ago after their robbing incident was caught on CCTV cameras along the same street.
Auala further revealed that the City Police also apprehended one of two suspects who allegedly tried to gain entry into the Woermann Brock shop in the Goreangab residential area on Friday morning.
They tried to access the building by cutting through the roof.
Auala said they were also spotted on CCTV cameras.
“We arrested one suspect while he was still on top of the building, trying to cut the roof to gain access to the business premises” she said. The other one ran away.
Earlier last month, City Police chief Abraham Kanime said footage from CCTV cameras along Eveline Street has been effective in catching criminals.
“They (cameras) are very good. They provide proof when a suspect is denying the deed. We need more CCTV cameras, especially around business premises and the central business district,” he told Nampa.
