Trustco United continued their great start to the T20 Premier League season with a 41-run victory against Wanderers at the Wanderers’ field on Saturday.

It was their fourth successive win in the competition which now puts them eight points clear of their closest rivals, WHS Old Boys, who beat CCD Tigers by eight wickets in another match at the same venue on Saturday.

United’s recent acquisition from South Africa, WP Myburgh, played a starring role with both bat and ball to guide them to victory.

He shared an 82-run opening partnership with Gerhard van Rensburg, before the latter was bowled by Bernard Scholtz for 38, and continued to bat till the death before being dismissed off the second last ball of the innings for 62 (58 balls, 6×4).

Handre Klazinga added 23 not out as they reached 143/5 off their 20 overs.

In reply, Wanderers suffered an early blow when Michau du Preez had to retire on four after injuring his arm.

United upped the pressure with Junior Kariata dismissing Karl Birkenstock for a duck, while Ruben Trumpelmann got the big wicket of JJ Smit, bowling him for two.

Nico Davin (27) and Jan-Izak de Villiers (22) started a bit of a revival, while Bernard Scholtz added 15 and PD Blignaut 21, but the wickets continued to fall, as they were restricted to 102/9 to give United a comfortable win.

For United, Trumpelmann took three wickets for nine runs, while Myburgh took 3/14 to win the man of the match award.

In Saturday afternoon’s match another recent South African recruit, Louren Steenkamp, played a starring role in WHS Old Boys’ eight-wicket victory against CCD.

CCD elected to bat after winning the toss and got off to a solid start with Nicholas van der Colff and Ramon Wilmot putting on 40 runs for the opening wicket.

Shaun Fouche, however, started their slide, bowling Van der Colff for 30, and with Wilmot (10), Nicol Loftie-Eaton (1) and Joshuan Julius (4) all going in quick succession, they crashed to 52/4 by the 13th over.

Donovan Zealand tried to revive the innings with a valuable knock of 36 (20 balls, 1×4, 3×6), but he received little support before the whole side was out for 109, with Fouche taking 3/20.

In reply Old Boy lost Zacheo van Vuuren early on for two runs, but Steenkamp and Fouche put them on track with a 100-run partnership at 10 runs to the over.

Steenkamp was the main instigator, scoring 78 runs off 39 balls (9×4, 4×6) to win the man of the match award, while Fouche remained not out on 26, as they reached the winning target with eight wickets and eight overs in hand.

United now lead the log on 16 points from four matches, followed by Old Boys on eight points from three matches, CCD (four points from three matches), and Wanderers (zero points from four matches).
