Transport union recovers N$1.4 million for workers

The Namibian Revolutionary Transport and Manufacturing Union (Naretu) has recovered N$1.4 million for its workers in 2025.

These awards flowed from reconciliation and arbitration processes ranging from unfair dismissals, unpaid wages and unlawful labour practices to related statutory claims.

The union recorded over 130 formally documented labour disputes during the year.

Commander in chief Petersen Kambinda says despite the year being marked by intense labour struggles for workers, the union has recovered N$970 000 which is set to increase to N$1 402 000 after a company auction of two cars.

“This figure will rise to N$1 402 000 with the anticipated auction of two cars by the sherrif of court, which we have successfully written off to claim money for our people,” he says.

Kambinda was speaking at an end-of-year press conference in Windhoek on Thursday.

He said of the 130 documented labour disputes recorded, 52 were resolved and 38 were settled, while a significant number remains pending.

Kambinda highlighted the rise in dismissals from minor infractions as a worrying trend of disciplinary abuse, intimidation, and disregard for procedural fairness across multiple sectors.
