Training on banana production held in Zambezi to empower rural communities

The Namibia Agronomic Board, in partnership with AvaGro, held a one-day training session on banana production at Kongola in the Zambezi region on Monday.

The initiative was aimed at promoting the economic viability of banana production in the region.

The one-day training brought together 20 aspiring banana producers and focused on the basics of banana production and the challenges of growing bananas.

AvaGro chief executive Leonie Hartmann says even though the event was a success, the number of participants that attended the training was relatively low compared to the over 60 participants that attended similar training at Etunda in the Omusati region last week.

Hartmann says Kongola was chosen because there is a one-hectare banana trial site that is being utilised for similar training initiatives that farmers can capitalise on to encourage value addition and boost food security.

She calls on people to attend similar training in future.

“These are public invitation initiatives aimed at empowering people in rural areas at no cost. It can have positive impacts for aspiring agri-preneurs,” Hartmann says.

Similar training will be held at Oshivelo in the Oshikoto region on Wednesday.

AvaGro is a leading agricultural solutions company dedicated to transforming traditional farming practices in Namibia and Africa through precision farming.
