‘Traffik’

‘Traffik’ (2018), Deon Taylor’s muddled thriller, gets a B for effort in its spotlight on the very real issue of human trafficking.

Starring Paula Patton as an intrepid journalist named Brea as well as Omar Epps, Laz Alonso and Roselyn Sanchez, the film strikes various tones as it rapidly evolves from gritty underworld club scene to the trials of journalists, racial tension at a small town gas station, sensual scenes in a sexy and secluded mansion in the hills and some stalking in the woods before a short detour into the belly of the sex trafficking beast.

Not overly committed to any of the genres it dips into, ‘Traffik’ is saved by a solid ensemble saddled with their characters’ dumb decisions and vaguest motivations.

Heavy on the violence, much of which is levelled at women, the film has good intentions but struggles to realise them in a way that is truly impactful and compelling.

Watchable at a lean 96 minutes, ‘Traffik’ is B-grade fair that takes the scenic route on the way to some sobering realities.
