The Toyota Hilux brand has identified a significant opportunity to serve the untapped small and medium enterprise market with its new range of versatile modular conversions.
Designed to meet the demanding needs of its customer base, these conversions are built to the same rigorous standards as the legendary Hilux itself.
Available in both 4×2 and 4×4 configurations for more rugged operations, these purpose-built vehicles offer a wide array of models and benefits.
Pupkewitz Toyota fleet sales consultant Rashaad Matjila says the conversions are not merely aftermarket additions but are integrated at the manufacturer’s plant to ensure factory-designed quality.
“It is a ‘pick-and-choose’ concept where you can decide what you want on your vehicle, whether it is a radio, a reverse camera, or a tow or nudge bar. It is like you can build your own vehicle,” he says.
The range of customisation is extensive. Customers can order their vehicle with steel or aluminium dropsides, cargo rails, or a field technician canopy with a half dropside, ideal for mobile mechanical workshops.
Other options include a field technician half canopy or a dry box designed for small and medium parcel couriers.
A key value addition is that all conversions are built on a flatbed chassis, allowing for a larger and more efficient loading capacity.
Matjila says this shift occurred after the brand realised the diverse requirements across different industry sectors.

“Instead of a ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach, the brand decided to go with a more practical solution,” he says.
Powering this series is the 2.4-litre GD diesel engine paired with a five-speed manual gearbox.
It delivers a reliable 110kW (corrected from 104kW per Toyota 2.4 GD specs) to navigate almost any terrain.
While the interior layout is functional and basic, it maintains the build quality associated with Toyota’s luxury bakkies.
Every conversion product has been rigorously tested and evaluated according to Toyota’s global specifications.
“This is not just a phase; these modular conversions are here to stay.
As time progresses, they will become even more adaptable to our clients’ needs,” Matjila says.
All conversion products are covered by a three-year or 100 000km warranty, matching that of the base vehicle.
