Landless People’s Movement (LPM) member of parliament Harald Kambrude is warning tourists against calling Namibia ‘South West Africa (SWA)’, saying it disrespects the country’s independence.
He said this while contributing to the roads bill in the parliament on Monday.
Kambrude said those calling Namibia by its apartheid name is reopening painful memories and disrespecting the country’s hard-fought independence.
“Our roads are regarded as some of the best, and it’s all thanks to tourists. But some still call Namibia SWA, and this is unacceptable. If they cannot call the country Namibia they must go, get out of our country, because that is disrespectful to our liberation struggle. We are a free country, not SWA,” he said.
Kambrude said despite political affiliations he is a patriot and will not tolerate outsiders or anyone else calling Namibia ‘SWA’.
He further expressed disappointment in the Roads Authority (RA) for neglecting Rehoboth, citing a lack of commitment to build more roads ar the town.
“Currently, the town only has one robot in the main road, compared to smaller towns. Rehoboth Urban constituency alone is bigger than Mariental, yet no commitment.
“I have decided to visit RA and all other stakeholders to make sure this is addressed,” he said.
