Top Score Registration opens

REGISTRATION for the popular To Score Seven-A-Side football tournament for companies has opened, with the event expected to kick off on January 19 next year, organisers announced this week.

The tournament, which attracts a host of corporate entities from especially within Windhoek, will carry a lucrative prize money of N$6 500 for the winner, while the second-best team will be rewarded with a handsome N$3 500. The tournament, which was won by Namibia Airports Company (NAC) last year, will also crown the top goal scorer, goalkeeper and the best disciplined team.This year, the tournament was played over 11 weeks and matches were played each Friday.A total of 74 teams entered for the competition, but the administrator of the tournament, Likius Hafeni, says more teams are expected for next season, as the tournament is growing every year and has become one of the most popular social sport events in the country.This year, the teams were divided into 16 groups with each consisting of four or five teams.Top Score registration opens The first-round matches were played on a league basis and 64 teams qualified for the next stage of the tournament.In the first round, 135 matches were played with a total of 228 goals scored.Some 1 890 minutes of football was played this year.The second half of the tournament was played on a knockout basis and 64 teams started in two groups in the first stage.The third stage and quarter-finals were played on one day, leaving the four teams for the finals.A total of 60 knockout matches were played and 133 goals were scored and 11 of those matches had to be decided through penalty shoot-outs, producing another 56 goals.At the end of the tournament this year, 199 matches were played, 434 goals were scored and the time of play amounted to 2 570 minutes.The top goal scorer for this year’s tournament was Jossy Ailonga of Radio Energy 100 who scored eight goals, while Abiud Kamburona of MTC and Bolle Hambira followed closely with seven goals each.Trade Centre received this year’s trophy for the most disciplined team.According to Hafeni, the registration for next year’s tournament has started, with the closing date set for January 14.The draw will be made on January 17.The entrance fee for the event will be N$2 000 per team and matches will be played each Friday for at least 14 weeks.He said the tournament was mainly a fund-raising event for the Ramblers Club, which intends to put up infrastructure for the various teams in its stable.He said people have the wrong perception that the tournament is a money-making scheme.”It is simply a fundraising drive which is part of the club’s efforts to be self-sustainable and put up the necessary infrastructurer which can also be of use to other organisations.”The tournament will be sponsored
