NAMIBIA’S best hockey players, including the young and upcoming ones, are expected let sparks fly at the DTS Sport Complex, when the annual Unam Indoor Hockey tournament gets into action on Saturday.
The tournament, possibly the biggest in hockey for years, will this time attract a total of 23 teams, with 42 matches lined-up. The one-day event have been hosted by the University of Namibia’s hockey club for the past seven years and their main sponsor has been the Namibia Breweries Limited (NBL) since.This year, NBL, through its brand Pepsi has sponsored N$11 000 for the event, which will also see three teams from the coast and players from Oshakati taking part for the first time.Unam Senior Sports and Cultural Officer, Ben Naobeb, this week expressed appreciation for the sponsorship.He said hockey is one of the country’s smaller codes with development programmes now at school level.He was quoted as saying that among higher education institutions in the country, Unam is the only academic institution that promotes hockey. The various players, whom some are national team players, are expected to compete in the men’s and women’s first and premier league divisions.
