The Tobie Van Wyk Race Day, organised by the Naris Turf Club, is scheduled to take place at the Rehoboth turf in the Hardap Region this Saturday.

The event is being held to formally commemorate the contributions of legendary horse racing figure Tobie Van Wyk, who contributed immensely to the sport in Hardap and Namibia.

Competition organiser, Eamon Freygang, told Nampa on Thursday that the prestigious event was not originally on the Namibia Horse Racing Association (NHRA) calendar this year. However, the Naris Turf Club decided to host it as a token of appreciation for both Van Wyk and the jockeys.

“We are killing two birds with one stone. We are paying respect to ‘Tobie’ and at the same time honouring our riders, who are important stakeholders in our sport,” Freygang said.

He added that jockeys need support, especially during the festive season, as they have families to support.

An amount of N$85 000 is up for grabs across 14 plates (races). Special focus will be given to races 13 and 14, which are the main events for Nambred and Thoroughbred horses, respectively.

The Nambred main race, which is Race 13 (D-Division), will see Leopard Lady, Miss Lollipop, Katiti Komambo, Boma, Destiny, She’s A Lady, Soldier Boy, and Bokkie compete.

Soldier Boy recently performed well at the MTC Summer Cup in Okahandja, while Boma, Destiny, and Leopard Lady are recognised names in Nambred racing.

The Thoroughbred main race (A-Division 2000m) is packed with big names like Woodland Ridge, Sitting Bull, Action Time, Whisper, Power Surge, Wondering Star, and Bold Boundaries.

Another exciting race will be the Import D-Division (1400m) category, where MTC champion Pee Jay will battle against Torix Night, Wylie Riley, Varistocracy, and Miraculous Man. Crystal Maiden, Del Boy, Starlito, Mr Aminuis, Time Master, World in Unison, and Desert Fox will compete against each other in the 1,600 m of Import graduation horses, alongside Muskiet, Spoorsny, Surprise, Miss Chicca’s, and Margrethe.

The first race is expected to start at 09h00. Adults will be charged N.dollars 50 at the gate, while children will pay N.dollars 20 to enter. The event will also feature live DJ performances and commentary.
