Tigers go top after beating Citizens

Tigers went to the top of the MTC NPL log after a come from behind 2-1 victory against Citizens at the Independence Stadium on Friday night.

Eduardo Eiseb gave Citizens the lead after 16 minutes, but Letu Shatimuene equalised from the penalty spot close to halftime.

Second half substitute Panduleni Nekundi scored the winner on 73 minutes when he volleyed in a cross from the right wing.

Citizens took an early lead after a great goal by Eiseb, who received the ball on the edge of the box and beat Tigers’ keeper with a shot that curled into the right hand corner.

Tigers pushed hard for the equaliser with Absalom Imbondi shooting wide from a quick counterattack, while Kennedy Amutenya headed wide from a corner.

Their pressure finally told on 39 minutes when Citizens defender Sem Shilimela fouled Lucky Kooper in the box and the referee immediately pointed to the penalty spot.

Citizens’ keeper Immanuel Immanuel got a leg to Letu Shatimuene’s shot but it was not enough as the ball deflected high into the net.

Tigers brought on national striker Panduleni Nekundi as a second half substitute and he immediately made an impact with his strong runs.

Wing back Benjamin Nenkavu and Absalom Imbondi also made strong runs into the box, with a great goal saving tackle by Tijuana Tjinotjiua denying Imbondi on 64 minutes.

Tigers’ keeper Fox Nambundunga was also kept busy at the other end, a he first punched away an Eduardo Eiseb shot for a corner and then tipped away a cracker by Henry Somseb.

But Tigers had the final say when Nekundi latched onto a cross from the right wing and volleyed the ball into the net from the edge of the box on on 73 minutes.

Tigers now join Black Africa at the top of the log on 17 points, although BA have a game in hand as they play third-placed African Stars (16 points) on Saturday at 18h00 at the Independence Stadium.
