Tigers beat Blue Boys to remain on top

Tigers maintained their three-point lead at the top of the NPL log after beating Blue Boys 1-0 at the Sam Nujoma Stadium on Saturday evening.

A goal by Panduleni Nekundi on 17m gave them the victory but Blue Boys spurned a great chance to draw level when they missed a penalty in the dying minutes.

Nekundi’ scored a great goal as he cut through the defence after exchanging passes with Benson Shilongo to beat Blue Boys keeper Gunther Spath from close range.

Blue Boys came out attacking in the second half but Tigers managed to keep them at bay, with goalie Lloyd Kazapua pulling off some fine saves.

Blue Boys had a great chance to draw level when they won a penalty with three minutes remaining but Kazapua once again pulled off a fine save to deny Clarence Foroma.

The result sees Tigers leading the log on 20 points, three ahead of Black Africa, who beat Orlando Pirates 1-0 in their derby match on Friday evening.

Striker Roger Katjiteo scored the winner after only five minutes when he stabbed home a loose ball after a shot by Willy Stephanus was blocked.

Towards the end of the first half, BA defender Emilio Martin and Pirates midfielder Sammy Ramosoeu clashed heads in a heading duel and both had to receive medical treatment. Martin eventually managed to resume play after having a cut on his head bandaged up, but Ramoseou’s condition was more serious and he was taken by ambulance to the hospital. He later recovered but was kept at hospital over the weekend for observation.

There was plenty of action in the second half with chances at both ends.

BA keeper Arnold Subeb pulled off a fine save from a Nicky Musambani header, and then from the resulting corner he once again saved well from a Marvin Areseb header.

At the other end, Bryan Bantam headed narrowly wide from a Stephanus cross, while Engelhardt Kahua cleared a shot by Katjiteo off the line.

African Stars remained third on the log on 16 points after their 2-0 victory against Ramblers on Wednesday evening.

Their goals came via Deon Hotto on 16m and Elvis Tjivasera on 72m.

Civics suffered a shock 2-1 defeat at home to bottom-of-the-log Rundu Chiefs.

Three minutes later Rundu Chiefs also won a penalty after a foul by Nico Narib in the box, and Mogale Naruseb stepped up to put the spot kick into the back of the net.

Civics had a great chance to equalise when they won a penalty 5m into injury time but Rundu keeper Wilhelm Shikongo brought off a fine save from Llewellyn Stanley’s shot.

Rundu Chiefs remain bottom of the log on 5 points, just behind Ramblers who are also on 5 points.
