Tiger Brands warns against leaky products

A FOOD and distribution company has cautioned their customers on a deficiency in a small number of cans manufactured by a third-party supplier, which could lead to cans leaking.

This was recently announced in a letter by Tiger Brands to their customers.

According to the group, the issue affects various KOO and Hugo’s canned vegetable products.

“No health issues have been reported to date. Although the likelihood of a health-and-safety risk is extremely low, matters of quality and food safety are non-negotiable for Tiger Brands,” the letter stated.

The company said the decision to voluntarily withdraw was made in consultation with the National Consumer Commission in the best interest of consumers.

“Canned products forming part of this recall cover various KOO canned vegetable products, Hugo’s baked beans, and Helderberg peas that were produced between 1 May 2019 and 5 May 2021. The recall excludes all KOO canned fruit products, KOO pilchards and KOO products packaged in glass,” the letter stated.

Among the leaky cans are KOO baked beans in tomato sauce, Hugo’s baked beans in tomato sauce, KOO butter beans, KOO chilli beans, and KOO cream-style sweetcorn that were manufactured between 1 May 2019 and 5 May 2021.

Luigi Ferrini, a chief customer officer at Tiger Brands Limited, said the company has briefed Tiger Brands’ operational field team to identify the stock in stores as well as distribution centres where relevant.

“The affected products can be readily identified either via the pallet label, or the date code on the can,” said Ferrini.

He said Tiger Brands will inform KOO and Hugo’s consumers of the recall through a public announcement.
