FOR the past week, the issue of same sex relations featured in the media with the United Nations pressuring government to amend the anti-sodomy law and the Ombudsman of Namibia, John Walters, expressing his support for LGBT openly.
Although this is a sensitive issue, I feel this is the right time to express my opinion regarding this matter.
We have pro-LGBT and anti-LGBT groups with each having arguments for their stance. I belong to the anti-LGBT school of thought although I do not share some radical ideas such as imprisonment or capital punishment for gay people.
I believe gay marriages in particular should not be allowed for the following reasons: The first reason is morality. Though evolution says we were once ape-like, I believe we evolved and are no longer ape-like. We are modern men. Our conscience tells us what is wrong and right. A man having a sexual relationship with another man is wrong and an act of immorality.
The LGBT proponents argue that a consensual sexual relationship between two adult men is fine because they are not violating anybody’s rights.
What they do not realise is that the same could be argued for a man who is in a sexual relation with an animal.
Who is he violating? Or a woman who walks naked in the streets claiming it is her body being exposed. Who is she violating?
My point is this, morality is there to guide us and it distinguishes human beings from animals.
If we create a society in which every individual has his/her own set of morals, then how will we differentiate good from bad? Who will correct who?
Secondly, there is no scientific proof to support homosexuality. A famous study conducted in America and Australia found that the environment in which people grow up plays a major role in determining their sexual orientation as they grow up.
The study debunked the common pro-LGBT argument that homosexuals are born that way.
The hypothesis of the study was this: If homosexuality is in the genes, then it is logical that twins who are born with the same genetic blueprint would carry the same sexual orientation, i.e if one of the twins is gay the other must also be gay since they carry the same genes.
However, the study found that identical twins with the same gene may have different sexual orientation – one being straight and the other gay.
In addition, in the 1800s, psychologists such as Freud categorised homosexuality as a mental illness but due to political correctness homosexuality was removed from the list of mental disorders.
So in other words, the way we raise our children matters a lot. Namibian parents should raise their boys to be men and their girls to be women.
To sum up: I think the term gay rights in Namibia is misleading because gay people have the same rights that every citizen has, except marriage.
Also we do not imprison nor kill gay people in Namibia.
I cannot see the need of crying persecution in Namibia, so do not destroy the image of this country.
