The Ministry of Environment, Forestry, and Tourism has received only three bids for the sale of 40 crocodiles.
This was confirmed by ministry spokesperson Romeo Muyunda on Wednesday.
“We are yet to conduct an evaluation of the bids received. We have received a total of three bids only,” he said.
He said further details, such as on the number of local and international companies that submitted bids, will only be available once the evaluation is completed.
The ministry last month announced the sale of 40 crocodiles to the public in a bid to address increasing cases of human-wildlife conflict.
The move comes in response to the rising number of incidents of crocodile attacks on humans and livestock in the north-eastern Kavango West, Kavango East, and Zambezi regions.
Human-wildlife conflict has become a growing concern over the years, leading to the ministry incurring costs amounting to over N$2,3 million in compensation for losses caused by crocodile attacks.
The decision to sell crocodiles aligns with the recommendations made during a recently concluded conference on human-wildlife conflict management.
Experts and stakeholders at the conference advised the ministry to proactively reduce the number of crocodiles in the affected regions.
