A 44-year-old truck driver was arrested alongside two others on Thursday at the Trans-Kalahari Border Post in the Omaheke region for allegedly trying to smuggle in cannabis worth N$5,8 million.
According to Omaheke police spokesperson chief inspector Fina Sakajengenga, the suspects were arrested at about 02h15.
“A suspect driving a Maritz Transport truck from South Africa was assisted by a Namra official to smuggle cannabis from Nomansland through the check point and was detected by the police officers on duty,” Sakajengenga says.
She says the cannabis weighed a total of 116 935 grams.
The suspects include the truck driver, a Namibia Revenue Agency (Namra) official (27), and a Tanzanian national (30).
“The three were charged and will appear in the Gobabis magistrate court on Monday,” she says.
