The Right Antivirus

You could say that a computer virus is like a flu, because it can easily spread and either duplicate, steal or delete your personal information. And there’s nothing more annoying than having to deal with malicious codes which alter the way you use your computer.

Also, many people are transferring data via USBs, phones and other devices through the ports in their computers so it’s easy for you to get ‘infected’ because you never know if these devices are safe are not.

That is why it’s important to have a strong and secure antivirus that will act as a shield and detect viruses before they affect your computer. Antiviruses spot threats quite easily – especially when they’re pretending to be safe programmes, and they’re available at most digital stores countrywide.

But which one has been deemed the best? A Twitter poll saw Kaspersky Security emerge as the winner with 32% voting it to the top, while AVG came in second place with 26%. McAfee was third with 21% of users voting that it worked for them, while the other 21% used other antiviruses. According to Twitter user @2ChainlezChainz, “Kaspersky takes over normal computer tasks” and “slows it down a bit”.

Antiviruses may be pricey, but it’s best to first use the trial version to see how it can work for you. Also, there are some free ones that are available on the internet. However, they will not always provide the best protection for you as some benefits are kept for the store-bought versions which offer plenty of options.

But are antiviruses still relevant today?

WatchGuard, an internet security solution, said in a report that “you’ll miss almost one third of malware without an advanced threat prevention solution”, meaning that antiviruses are necessary, however, the more advanced, the more likely you are to prevent viruses from spreading. And the bigger the company, the stronger the internet protection needs to be.

However, for the average user, depending on what you’re looking for, you don’t need to spend an arm and a leg to protect your personal data.

But make sure that your antivirus has the following: real-time protection, firewalls, an option to update regularly and a high percentage of detection. Real-time protection keeps your antivirus active no matter the time so that you don’t have to worry about attacks.

Firewalls prevent unauthorised access, meaning you have to approve all changes to your computer from random programmes. Because of the rise of viruses daily, it’s important to keep your antivirus updated. Also, remember to check out how well your antivirus protects your PC by checking out the statistics.
