The Responsible Thing To Do

I HAVE been following the developments around the finding and securing an abandoned shotgun on the banks of the Okavango River on the 15th August.

It is unbelievable that Minister John Mutorwa should question the action of taking this straight to the Police? It would have been extremely irresponsible to leave a firearm unattended anywhere in the world (including Namibia), especially on the Angolan border! Obviously, the most responsible thing to do is exactly what Paxton did, which is to “take it straight to the Police”. In most countries firearms require some form of control, the owner of the shotgun should be prosecuted for firearm negligence! My wife and I were Canadian guests staying at Shamvura Camp at the time.We were impressed by the Police response and investigation, as well as the good co-operation between the manager of the camp and the Police. It was on Thursday August 16, when Mark postponed our boating activities in order to assist the Police, that a young policeman told us that the firearm was licensed to Sebastan Kurupu, the Regional Councillor for the area.It would be fair to assume that the owner of the firearm is being investigated for firearm negligence?
