The New Mercedes S65 AMG Coupe- Unique Exclusivity and Performance

Mercedes has released full details of the S65 AMG Coupé – the new flagship of the two-door S-Class line-up is now available.

Twelve-cylinder engines are still considered the pinnacle of engine design. Among connoisseurs, the AMG 6.0-litre V12 biturbo engine in particular is seen as an outstanding example of its type. Open the bonnet of the S65 AMG Coupé and it is immediately obvious why: the exclusive carbon fibre/aluminium engine cover is synonymous with the exceptional strengths of the V12 engine, built in Affalterbach according to the “one man, one engine” principle.

Apart from serving as an AMG hallmark confirming superlative precision and production quality, the AMG engine plate bearing the engine technician’s signature is also a clear testament to the peerless DNA of Mercedes-Benz’s high-performance brand.

Under the bonnet you’ll find AMG’s 5980cc biturbo V12 – aluminium crankcase, forged crankshaft in high-grade alloy steel, multi-spark ignition air-to-water intercooler, the whole nine yards, delivering 463kW between 4800 and 5400rpm, and 1003Nm from 2300 to 4300rpm to the rear wheels via a seven-speed AMG Speedshift Plus 7G-Tronic transmission with three individual modes – Controlled Efficiency, Sport and Manual – selectable by pushing a button on the centre console.

Controlled Efficiency is more than enough to get you around town comfortably. Sport and Manual modes however, emphasise the vehicle’s dynamism, unleashing the ultimate emotional appeal and tangible sportiness is ensured by the brief, precisely defined cutback of ignition and injection when shifting up a gear under full load. This shortens shift times and lends an audibly more emotive tone to gearshifts.

That’s enough to launch the 65 two-door to 100km/h in four seconds flat and on to an electronically controlled 250km/h.

The AMG 6.0-litre V12 biturbo engine assures a sensational drive: stylish drive comfort, tremendous pulling power and effortless power delivery in all speed ranges are coupled with refined engine running characteristics and the distinctive roar of the AMG V12.

The AMG sports suspension combines Active Body Control, Road Surface Scan and Curve Tilting Function, allowing the car to lean into bends like a motorcyclist or skier, using a stereo camera behind the windscreen and a lateral acceleration sensor.

Road Surface Scan detects road surface variations in advance with a stereo camera and Magic Body Control then adjusts the suspension in advance to suit the situation, compensating for irritating chassis movement.

The S65 AMG Coupé runs on highly polished 20” forged-alloy mutispoke rims wrapped with 255/40 front and 285/40 rear tyres. Each of the 16 spokes twists so that the light-catching contours radiate to the centre of the wheel hub, where there’s a forged-aluminium screw-on bolt cover that looks like a racing wheel-lock.

Special AMG sports seats trimmed in perforated, diamond-pattern nappa leather with contrast stitching feature electric adjustment, memory function, seat heating and climate control as standard, as well as contoured seat cushions and backrests for lateral support and AMG badges on all four backrests, and the front centre console.

The special instrument cluster displays revs, speed and much more on two animated round dials on the 310mm, high-resolution colour display.

Standard kit includes a head-up display for information such as the vehicle speed, speed limits, navigation directions and traffic signs, and a 63 x 43mm touchpad in the centre armrest for all the infotainment functions.

Standard equipment for the S65 AMG Coupé includes a 360° camera, active parking assist with ParkTronic, distronic plus with steering assist, Pre-Safe, BAS Plus with cross-traffic assist, active blind spot assist, active lane keeping assist and Pre-Safe Plus. These new systems make the new S-Class Coupé even more comfortable and safe.

The S 65 AMG Coupé features a lithium-ion battery as standard. This innovative technology offers numerous advantages over a conventional battery concept: with a capacity of 78 Ah, the lithium-ion battery replaces both the starter battery and the backup battery – resulting in a weight saving of over 20 kg.

Following the S65 AMG, the SL 65 AMG and the G65 AMG, the new S65 AMG Coupé is the fourth AMG high-performance car with a V12 engine. No other car manufacturer in the world offers such a wide portfolio of twelve-cylinder vehicles as Mercedes-AMG. Back in 2003 the performance brand of Mercedes-Benz presented a coupé with a powerful V12 biturbo engine in the form of the CL 65 AMG. Its successor was available between 2007 and 2014 and was the direct predecessor to the new S65 AMG Coupé.

“There are AMG fans for whom our V12 biturbo engine is the measure of all things. For this clientele we have developed a unique car in the form of the new S 65 AMG Coupé. From driving dynamics to comfort and equipment – our new twelve-cylinder coupé surpasses even the highest of expectations,” says Florian Seidler executive director of Mercedes-Benz Cars South Africa.
