The late Reuben Beukes Chess champ dies in accident

THE identity of a young man who died on Tuesday after his car crashed into a pillar on the Western Bypass on the road between Okahandja and Windhoek has been released.

He was 22-year-old Windhoek resident Reuben Beukes. Beukes, the son of the late Dr Kehat Beukes, was a celebrated chess player, and was crowned National Chess Champion of Namibia in 2006.Beukes was also the youngest person ever to win the Sanlam Namibia National Chess Championship in that year.The National Chess Federation yesterday expressed its condolences with Beukes’ family, adding that his death was a great loss to the sport.”He had so much potential to offer.It’s an immense loss to us and we will remember him as a good person and for his contribution towards chess in Namibia,” an official statement by the Federation said.Beukes, the son of the late Dr Kehat Beukes, was a celebrated chess player, and was crowned National Chess Champion of Namibia in 2006.Beukes was also the youngest person ever to win the Sanlam Namibia National Chess Championship in that year.The National Chess Federation yesterday expressed its condolences with Beukes’ family, adding that his death was a great loss to the sport.”He had so much potential to offer.It’s an immense loss to us and we will remember him as a good person and for his contribution towards chess in Namibia,” an official statement by the Federation said.
