The Labour Act made simple

THE Labour Resource and Research Institute (LaRRI) yesterday launched a simplified guide to the new Labour Act.

The new labour law was passed and signed into law at the end of last year and because laws are generally difficult to understand, the booklet will come in handy for employees, trade unions and companies. At the launch of the booklet, Labour and Social Welfare Minister Alpheus !Naruseb said the biggest challenge facing the effectiveness of Labour Act has been inadequate awareness of the requirements of the Act, the rights and obligations that it creates and how to apply it.”There are workplaces where the Labour Act is either not applied, or applied selectively or partially,” said !Naruseb.”The public and particularly the employers and employees need to have a good understanding not merely of what the Labour Act requires, but also why it was enacted,” he said.”The Labour Act of 2007 is not merely a piece of regulatory legislation for the labour market, it is an instrument that will help to promote the welfare of our people.”When we address problems of productivity, labour disputes, strikes, plant closures and retrenchments, all of which are affected by the labour legislation, we must analyse these issues with reference to the goals of decent work and ensure that our solutions are true to the nation’s goals and values.”The Labour Act Guide will be widely distributed throughout the country.
