Sue von Beukes is a 22-year-old final year student at the College of the Arts.
Born and raised in Windhoek, her love for drawing started by watching her father draw.
“My father is very good at what he does and so I wanted to be just like him. I started imitating his drawings. I have been drawing since I was nine years old. When I’m not drawing, I listen to music and do tattoos on the side,” she tells the YouthPaper.
She says that her paintings are drawn from an African contemporary context and the realities of the streets honed her skills. The paintings are depicted with great expressive emotion, are vibrant and have clear detail.
“Art has always played an important role in my life ever since I was young, and it’s a way of expressing myself. It’s my therapy and I’m very passionate about it. I’m currently working on a body painting project where I will make a statement and create awareness on gender issues in Namibia,” she said.
She names Francoise Nielly, a French knife-painter ,who is famous for painting vibrant and colourful closeup portraits of people, as her inspiration. “A lot of my work is intrinsically inspired by him. I literally draw inspiration from him as I like his technique and choice of colour”.
