It’s funny how men feel so free to talk about life’s issues and even pick up a bit of advice at a barbershop while sitting down for a trim. While I prefer to keep my challenges private, there is just something about the atmosphere of sitting down at the hands of a barber who makes you feel comfortable enough to talk.
And regardless of the fact that trusting people is an absolute risk nowadays, you simply feel at ease and confident in sharing your views and opinions between those four walls.
And when I listen to the conversations and all the advice and views going back and forth, I can’t help but feel convinced that most men leave the place with a fresh perspective.
I was particularly zoomed in on this last week at my regular weekly session, during which I experienced the same level of comfort. And I couldn’t help but wonder if this is the same level of comfort men dream of having with their romantic partners, family and friends.
Sometimes we are more comfortable speaking to a stranger than we are to those closest to us. But just imagine if we had this kind of relationship with those who actually matter.
Sometimes men just want to chill and feel at ease. Free to talk about anything and everything. Sometimes men get tired of always being at fault and being the bad guy. Sometimes men simply long for a world or relationship in which he feels free to speak his mind and react to his emotions, but still feel safe and appreciated at the same time.
Men also get tired of being accused of everything that goes wrong, or continuously being suspected of wrong-doing. They want to be appreciated, flaws and all. Sometimes men simply want their better halves to just be a buddy as well.
I am sure I speak on behalf of most, if not all men, when I say that sometimes they wish to freely and spontaneously have that barbershop conversation at home as well – to have that level of comfort that makes them feel whole, and give them fresh perspective, new insights and new beginnings. New hope.
Sometimes men just want to be men, and not feel forced into being someone they are not. They just want to feel comfortable enough to kick off their shoes and throw back on the couch for a moment without being judged.
But it’s also the other way around, gents. Not only when it comes to your romantic partner, but I think it is the coolest thing ever that anyone who crosses your path feels comfortable enough to just be, without feeling judged or belittled, or guilty.
We all have it in us to instill hope and joy in the life of the next person. We all have it in us to change the outlook of someone else for the better. If people do not feel comfortable in your company, or if people do not like you, perhaps it is time to have a look in the mirror.
We all have flaws, challenges and imperfections and we all make mistakes. And it is only when we come to terms with the reality that we are not perfect that we will learn to accept others for who they are.
Till next time gents, cheers!
