The Debate Corner DHPS on a Roll

A team of four debaters from the Deutsche Höhere Privatschule (DHPS) is currently participating in the 2015 Zula Radio Energy High School Debating Tournament.

These four Grade 11 pupils are Daphne Mbahuma, Tjaove Pack, Utani Hikuam and Nico Barandonga. They won their first two encounters against Cosmos Secondary School (where they argued that corporal punishment should not be reintroduced in high schools) and Okahandja Secondary School, where they had to strongly oppose the lowering of the voting age to 16 from 18.

As their opponents were not on time for this event, the DHPS team had to debate against the organiser, Penda Hangala, but did so more than convincingly. This leaves DHPS with two more encounters in their group in the preliminary round, namely against Negumbo Secondary School on 9 July and against Windhoek High School on 3 September. These debates can be listened to on Radio Energy 100FM at 14h00 on both days.

Should the DHPS team make it to the semi-finals, they will be debating on 22 September on one of the following topics: ‘the legal drinking age should be increased to 21’ or ‘cloning humans and animals is unethical’.

During the past few weeks, these young students have improved their debating skills tremendously, learnt to think on their feet and enjoyed these confrontations, showing admirable sportsmanship and being excellent ambassadors of their school.

The event organisers also congratulated Utani Hikuam, who was selected to be a member of the Khomas Regional team in the National Youth Council Debate Competition.
