Week five of the Zula Energy100FM High School Debating competition saw Academia Secondary School maintain their lead in Group A by defeating Windhoek Gymnasium during an intense debate session.
They debated on the motion ‘this house believes that weapons of mass destruction should be eliminated voluntarily’ and now comfortably lead this group with nine points against the six held by Acacia High School in second position.
Eldorado Secondary School performed excellently against rival David Bezuidenhout High School by defeating them on the motion ‘this house believes that smoking should be banned completely’. Dawid Bezuidenhout however still leads the group but with equal points to Eldorado.
Windhoek High School bounced back with a close win over Cosmos High School on the motion “this house believes that performance enhancement drugs be allowed in sport”. This victory consolidated them maintaining the second position in Group C. Gabriel Taapopi High School continued the winning streak by defeating Ongwediva town rivals Mweshipandeka Secondary School on the motion ‘this house believes that plastic bags should be banned’. They now lead Group D with a solid 15 points.
The schedule for week six (23 and 25 June) is as follows:
• Tuesday, 23 June 2015 at 14h00: Concordia College (for) vs Nujoma Secondary School (against) and the motion is ‘this house believes that Physical Education should be mandatory in schools’.
• Tuesday, 23 June 2015 at 14h30: Highline Secondary School (for) vs Iipumbu Secondary School (against) and the motion is ‘this house will grant the right to die’.
• Thursday, 25 June 2015 at 14h00: Okahandja Secondary School (for) vs Negumbo Secondary School (against) and the motion is ‘this house believes that Mathematics should be a compulsory subject in high schools’.
• Thursday, 25 June 2015 at 14h30: A. Shipena Secondary School (for) vs Mweshipandeka Secondary School (against) and the motion is ‘this house will encourage the expanded use of civilian nuclear energy’.
The organisers encourages fellow youth and interested members of the public to tune in to Energy100FM to listen to the leaders of tomorrow debate various issues of relevance to our country.
