The Blessing and Curse of Christmas

I know this time of the year can cause quite a headache, especially when it comes to finding the perfect gift for a loved one. This is a time rife with the stress of creating a special festive season for our partners and for those with children, the pressure is immense.

Some of us have our mothers high on our list of priorities over Christmas, especially if your mom turns 60 this year… on Christmas day. Then there is that very special friend you’ve accepted as family for whom you wish to do something special.

We are often so pressured to go all out in showing how much we care that we have the tendency to spend beyond our means – financially, emotionally and physically. We place so much pressure on ourselves to make it an extraordinary experience but forget that the value of the gesture goes far beyond the price tag.

We often neglect ourselves in the process because we are so focused on pleasing others that we forget about your own wellbeing. Sometimes the stress and pressure you place on yourself has detrimental effects on your health.

December holidays are supposed to be a time to relax, unwind and rejuvenate from the hectic year. A time to find yourself.

We put all this pressure on ourselves because when we were growing up, our families did everything possible to make this time of the year a special one. We’ve grown accustomed to it, it has become a part of us.

Of course the idea of hunting for presents and doing Christmas shopping adds to the feeling of celebration. That lovely festive spirit that seems to put a warm glow on everything. I love that, the whole Christmas vibe.

The shopping, the wrapping of presents, the decorations, Christmas music, the delicious food and the family time – just embracing that wonderful spirit of thankfulness and giving.

Unfortunately I’ve experienced at times that when it all is over, you sort of pick up the pieces you lost along the way. The fractured budget, the exhaustion and at times the health issues that emerge. We don’t take care of ourselves, we don’t sleep enough, we party too much, we overindulge in food and alcohol and we place our bodies under stress.

You wouldn’t be alone for wondering if it’s even worth it. Perhaps don’t leave the Christmas shopping to the last three days. Do things at a leisurely pace, so that you don’t need to rush and spend more than you can afford.

This may help lower your stress levels, rescue your bank balance and in turn allow for a healthier and more relaxed festive season.

While I believe we should show our appreciation to loved ones throughout the year, there is nothing as special as Christmas time to do a little extra.

Just plan it properly to avoid unnecessary stress, sickness and financial strain.

Enjoy the Christmas shopping; I hope you find the perfect gift for that special one. One that won’t leave you financially stranded!

Till next time gents, cheers!
