TELEPHONE services have been restored to most areas of Windhoek, Gobabis and Summerdown, after heavy rains damaged fibre optic cables in these areas.
Damage to a major cable which feeds seven direct line units in Windhoek’s Hochland Park area and portions of Windhoek West and Southern Industria, left 3 000 customers without a telephone service from Friday. Repair work also had to be done to a cable servicing 800 customers in the City’s Avis area which was damaged by flood waters.Telecom said on Tuesday that phone services in the Grysblok area of Katutura should have been back by yesterday.The copper cable connecting the suburb to the national network was damaged when heavy rains washed away the Grysblok bridge.Stations serving the Gobabis and Summerdown areas, between Otjinene and Omitara, suffered damage as a result of lightning.Telecom has also replaced 15 telephone poles that fell between Karibib an Usakos.Repair work also had to be done to a cable servicing 800 customers in the City’s Avis area which was damaged by flood waters.
