Teachers to be laid off in Kavango

RUNDU – About 890 teachers will be laid off by the end of this year in the Kavango Region alone.

This was revealed by Kavango Regional Governor Johannes Thighuru in a Regional Council meeting with President Hifikepunye Pohamba on Saturday. The Governor was concerned that the move to lay off unqualified and under-qualified teachers would leave many schools short-staffed, affecting education in the region.”The gap is very big, and learners will be left without teachers.”This will have a negative impact on the region and consequently result in higher unemployment, contributing to poverty and affecting the development in the region.Furthermore, the absence of decentralised full-time centres for the University of Namibia and Polytechnic in the region is another cause for concern, the Governor noted.”Our learners, who may be qualifying for entrance into the University and Polytechnic, find it difficult to get accommodation in Windhoek,” said Thighuru.Currently, the Rundu College of Education produces only about 120 teachers a year. The move to lay off unqualified teachers was taken by the Ministry of Education.NampaThe Governor was concerned that the move to lay off unqualified and under-qualified teachers would leave many schools short-staffed, affecting education in the region.”The gap is very big, and learners will be left without teachers.”This will have a negative impact on the region and consequently result in higher unemployment, contributing to poverty and affecting the development in the region.
