‘Tea Party 4 Hope’ lives up to its billing

The annual cancer party ‘Tea Party 4 Hope’ once again hosted a successful event at the Doc Jubber cricket sports field in Olympia recently.

The event, regarded as Namibia’s biggest cancer party, aimed to raise awareness of the different types of cancer, as well as funds to benefit cancer patients.

This year’s edition attracted over 190 attendees, mostly women, who congregated and dressed according to the theme: ‘Pink Panther’.

The event was organised by Elevate Edify Life Coaching and featured various speakers from the medical fraternity who shed light on breast and cervical cancer, including specialist doctors Nashin Dengo and Joseph Mufenda, who shared their experiences and current cancer statistics in Namibia.

Attendees were advised to undergo regular cancer screening, with mammograms and pap smears recommended for those aged 40 and above.

Mufenda said girls as young as nine can receive the Human papillomavirus vaccine to prevent future cancer risk, while parents with children of that age should consider having them vaccinated.

Among the speakers was Tuuliki Amwele, a cancer survivor, who shared her journey.

Amwele emphasised the importance of following doctors’ instructions for treatment and health restoration.

She said she never missed a doctor’s appointment or chemotherapy session which helped her conquer the disease.

Entertainer Lioness shared her story of losing her mother to cancer and how it led to her successful music career.

Equipped Dance Academy performed a routine symbolising the strength people can find within themselves to battle cancer with the right mindset, alongside medical practitioners.

The event was further energised by a performance by Ethnix, who had the crowd on their feet with the song ‘Omaronga’.

Founder of the event Violette Mureko says this year’s ‘Tea Party 4 Hope’ brought new ways and ideas to create platforms for all Namibians across the country to have access to ever-advancing information because knowledge is power in educating and creating awareness.

“We are certain that we will foster a nation that fights against cancer collectively. It is with hope that many more events, such as the ‘Tea Party 4 Hope’, will make a difference in the health of women and men across Namibia,” says Mureko.
