Taxi driver arrested for allegedly assaulting schoolgirl

A pupil (14) was allegedly indecently assaulted by a taxi driver in Windhoek on Monday afternoon.

National police spokesperson deputy commissioner Kauna Shikwambi says the incident happened between 13h00 and 15h00, when the girl was reportedly picked up by a taxi from a school in Khomasdal.

“She was the only passenger in the vehicle and was destined to be dropped off at Katutura,” Shikwambi says.

During the journey, the driver allegedly asked the girl about her age and whether she had a boyfriend.

When she said she did not, the suspect allegedly began touching her inappropriately.

After dropping her off, he allegedly gave her his phone number and asked her to contact him later.

“When the girl got home, she was crying and told her mother what had happened. The mother then contacted the taxi driver, who reportedly came to the house, where he was subsequently assaulted by members of the public,” Shikwambi says.

A case of indecent assault has been opened, and the suspect was arrested. He was later taken to the hospital.

The suspect has not yet been formally charged, and police investigations are continuing.

The police are urging members of the public, particularly pupils and parents, to remain vigilant and exercise caution when using public transport.
