WHAT price a turkey for Christmas dinner? Well, quite a lot if you don’t shop around for the best prices.
The Namibian’s photographer Henry van Rooi popped in to a few supermarkets to check the prices, after complaints from a few consumers about vast discrepancies between them. He priced the same brandname turkey, Sadia, apparently imported from Brazil, and this is what he found: Checkers at Maerua Mall came off best with a consumer-friendly price of N$17.99 per kilo; Pick ‘n Pay Wernhil was second at N$20,95 a kilo; and Woermann Brock Klein Windhoek was hugely expensive at N$46,99 per kilo.Editor Gwen Lister had bought a turkey at Woermann and Brock for a whopping N$164, and after visiting Checkers at Maerua over the weekend, noticed turkeys at similar weight costing $100 less. She returned to Woermann Brock with turkey in tow to query their prices and to ask whether they’d made a mistake in pricing, but managers assured her they were correct. They informed her they were supplied by Blue Marine Interfish wholesalers, and that possibly other outlets got their supplies directly from South Africa.Pick ‘n Pay and Checkers management, when approached, confirmed that their turkeys had been supplied directly from Cape Town, South Africa. So make sure you don’t have the stuffing taken out of you if you’re talking turkey this Christmas!
