Swapo candidate Paulus Nekundi won Otjiwarongo’s by-election on Tuesday.
Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) returning officer Melody Muesee on Wednesday announced that Nekundi is Otjiwarongo’s duly elected new constituency councillor.
Muesee said Nekundi won with 3 235 votes, followed by Popular Democratic Movement (PDM) candidate Ernst Muraranganda with 810 votes.
Independent Patriots for Change (IPC) candidate Wilbardt Haihambo got 746 votes, while Gabriel Manse of the Namibia Economic Freedom Fighters (NEFF) got 126 votes.
Muesee said a total of 4 935 votes were cast, with 35 spoiled votes.
Voting commenced at 07h00 on Tuesday and concluded at 21h00.
The counting of votes followed shortly after the closure of polling stations at 21h00, before the final results were announced at the Vooruit Primary School Hall.
Approximately 27 870 eligible voters were registered by the ECN for the by-election, which was necessitated by the departure of constituency councillor Marlayn Mbakera, who joined the parliament on 21 March.
