Aupindi got 15 votes compared to Imms Nashinge, the official opposition leader, who got seven.
The natural resources committee is charged with parliamentary oversight on behalf of the National Assembly in pursuance of Article 63(2)(f) of the Constitution.
“Among some of the powers is the power to make and repeal laws for the peace, order and good governance of the country in the best interest of the Namibian people. Note that the emphasis is on the Namibian people,” Aupindi said.
This follows the election of chairpersons and deputy chairpersons for parliamentary standing committees on Tuesday.
Aupindi expressed gratitude to his Swapo comrades and members of parliament for nominating him and electing him, while commending Nashinge as his opponent.
He said the committee has many responsibilities including the duty to monitor, enquire into, and make recommendations to the National Assembly on matters that affect the country’s natural resources.
He said gone the days when some bureaucrats award licences, concessions and rights to multinational companies at the expense of the Namibian people are over.
He said natural resources beneficiation has to become a priority as enshrined in Swapo’s manifesto in order to create jobs and wealth.
Modestus Amutse was elected as chairperson of the constitutional and legal affairs and petitions committee, deputised by Sirkka Ausiku.
James Uerikua was elected as the international relations, defence and security committee chairperson, with Utaara Mootu deputising.
The economy and industry, public administration and planning committee will be chaired by Iipumbu Shiimi and deputised by Hilma Iita.
Elections are expected to conclude on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, Elifas Dingara was elected as chairperson of the urban and rural development and land reform committee, with Clemencia Coetzee as deputy chairperson.
Marlayn Mbakera slots in as chairperson of the education, youth, civic relations and community development committee, deputised by Austin Samupwa.
Justina Jonas was elected as chairperson of the poverty eradication, labour and industrial relations committee, with Salomon April as deputy chairperson.
