Swapo secretary general Shaningwa reaffirms ties with Iran, condemns attack on Ayatollah Khamenei

Swapo secretary general Sophia Shaningwa met with Iran’s ambassador to Namibia, Mohammed Baqer Beigi, at the party’s head office in Windhoek on Wednesday, reaffirming ties of solidarity and mutual respect between the two countries.

The engagement comes amid heightened conflict in the Middle East – a region critical for global oil supply.

After the meeting, Shaningwa posted on social media that the party is extending its condolences to the people of Iran following the death of its supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Khamenei was killed in the United States and Israel’s attack on Iran on 28 February.

Shaningwa describes the attack as “unjustified aggression and an illegal military operation”.

“We offer our sincere condolences to the people of Iran and stand in solidarity with them, just as they stood with Namibians during the course of the liberation struggle waged by Swapo,” she says.

She affirms the party’s rejection of imperialism and says it is in favour of peace, multilateralism and cooperation among nations.
