Swapo campaigns at belated Independence Day

FORMER Swapo regional councillor for Hardap used the belated Mariental urban constituency’s Independence Day celebrations event to campaign for votes ahead of this year’s national elections.

Barakias Namwandi, who was the master of ceremonies at the poorly attended event held this morning at Mariental’s Aimablaagte residential area, told tghe people who attended the event to vote for the Swapo Party during the national elections.

“We are going to vote for the president (Swapo president Hage Geingob) and for Swapo Party, and not for the nonsense LPM (new political party Landless People’s Movement),” he said.

“They are puppets and useless fellows,” he said of opposition political parties in the country.

The former politician urged the attendees to register for their voters’ cards in order for them to be able to vote during this year’s national elections.

Barakias attributed the poor attendance to many events happening at the town over the Easter weekend such as 19th edition of The Namibian Newspaper Cup soccer and netball tournament being held at the town’s soccer stadium.

“You must attend meetings whether there is food or not,” he told the crowd, and reiterated that they, especially the young generation, should go to the ballot box during national elections.

The attendees were spoilt with food after the event.

The Mariental urban constituency councillor, Nico Mugenga, was more diplomatic only shouting “Viva the liberating Swapo Party” when he addressed the crowd as the main speaker at the event.

He told attendees Independence Day celebrations are meant to honour fallen heroes, who had fought the liberation of Namibia.

Because of this, he said people cannot make excuses when it comes to attending the Independence Day celebrations.

Mugenga thanked the people who attended the gathering, saying they had showed respect to the government and also recognised the liberators of the country by coming to the event.
