Swapo has called for the immediate release of Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores.
Party secretary general Sophia Shaningwa made this call in a statement on Tuesday.
“We firmly call for the immediate and unconditional release of president Maduro and his wife, allowing him to resume his duties in service to his nation without further interference,” the statement reads.
Shaningwa condemned the United States’ actions against Venezuela, describing them as unjustifiable aggression.
She said the party extends its unwavering solidarity to the people of Venezuela, as well as to Maduro and Flores, following what is described as his unprecedented abduction by the US on Saturday.
Swapo has strongly condemned the unilateral action undertaken by the US, which, in its view, is contrary to established norms of international law and the Charter of the United Nations.
Such measures, including military invasion of a sovereign nation and the subsequent detention of a sitting head of state, the party said, undermine the foundational tenets of diplomatic relations and pose a serious threat to global stability.
“We urge all nations and international organisations to uphold the sovereignty of independent nations and to adhere strictly to international law, which has kept us together as a global village,” reads the statement.
Violations of these principles, Shaningwa said, not only erode trust among nations but also hinder collective efforts towards global peace and cooperation.
The party called upon the international community, particularly peace-loving nations in Africa and the world, to demonstrate unwavering solidarity with Venezuela.
