SWAPO today accused critics of its weekend colour party near a Windhoek informal settlement of being “enemies” and “elements” pushing for the downfall of the ruling party in the upcoming elections.
In a statement by Swapo spokesperson Hilma Nikanor on Tuesday, the party cried foul about negative reports on its colour party held at Ombili in Windhoek last weekend.
“To distort and misinterpret the party’s colours day as showing off ‘wealth’ or taunting the poor with material possessions and a disregard to the difficulties the country is facing, is a disgrace and a poor attempt to discredit the Swapo Party,” Nikanor said.
She claimed there were “elements” who wanted to reduce the number of seats that the ruling party should get in the National Assembly and a cut in the number of votes for the party’s presidential candidate, Hage Geingob.
“I must once again remind the Swapo Party enemies that Swapo remains the only party that has a programme to develop Namibia,” she said.
The ruling party is accused of flaunting wealth in one of the poorest areas of the city.
“To accuse Swapo of being oblivious to the challenges such as poverty facing our nation, is widely ignorant,” Nikanor said.
She also accused the media of selective reporting.
“It is very unfortunate that we have very unprofessional media reporters with principles of unethical and bias reporting, that regardless of the economic hardships our country is faced with, they are still opting to play with our peoples’ emotions – all that in the pursuit of their agenda to try and destroy Swapo (sic),” she said.
Nicanor was recorded on video saying that with the event over the weekend the party wanted to show the country’s wealth and to celebrate the lives of those who died in the struggle for Namibia’s independence.
