THE most important addition to Swakopmund’s new N$23 million sport stadium, the eight-lane tartan track, was recently completed.
Chairman of the Swakopmund Sport Committee, Tony Britz, believes it is an asset to Namibia’s sport facilities. It is one of three tartan tracks in Namibia – the other two are in Windhoek and at Oshakati – and has eight lanes, the same as Windhoek’s Independence Stadium.Oshakati’s track has six lanes.Britz said the project started in the 2003-2004 financial year and is nearing completion.”We have everything we need here to host local and international sports events, and other big functions. What is still required though is a suitable fence around the sport stadium and all its facilities,” he told The Namibian. He said tenders have already gone out and a site inspection for the fencing project has taken place. The stadium can hold 1 500 spectators, with VIP suites. The capacity will increase when another open stand is built on the eastern side of the track. It is still not certain when the track will be inaugurated, and the name is still a secret.Other enhanced facilities include tennis and netball courts.
