Swakopmund has introduced an initiative allowing residents to commemorate loved ones who have died through the town’s memorial bench project.

With the involvement of the community in the planning, the initiative aims to provide “a sanctuary for memories, reflection, and even healing,” according to Swakopmund mayor Dina Namubes.

She presided over the project’s launch on Tuesday.

An essential part of the initiative is financial contributions from the community.

Every installation of a memorial bench requires the finances to cover purchasing, installing, and maintaining the bench.

Currently, a three-seater royal bench is priced at N$6 325, although this could vary annually.

The initiative is specific about who can be commemorated with a bench.

“The deceased must have been a resident of Swakopmund and have been deceased for at least one year prior to a request,” Namubes said.

The municipality will maintain a map highlighting various locations where memorial benches can be installed.

Attention to detail extends to the bench design, ensuring it harmonises with its surroundings.

“They are testament to the enduring power of love and the indomitable spirit of the human soul,” Namubes said.

Applications for memorial benches are now open, and details can be obtained from the Swakopmund Municipality.
