The MTC Nestor Sunshine Tobias Boxing & Fitness Academy yesterday announced an extensive youth development programme aimed at uplifting the sport in Namibia.
Under the theme, ‘Fighting for youth empowerment and with gloves we give,’ the programme aims to develop amateur boxing at youth level, through programmes and tournaments, as well as through scholarships, while it includes a social responsibility drive focussed on community development.
Academy founder Nestor Tobias also announced an amateur boxing series that will be held in various regions, as well as upcoming professional events.
Tobias said the youth development programme is a long-running initiative of the academy that offers sport, fitness and boxing programmes to the youth, while it also offers scholarships for talented young boxers.
“It is expected that those awarded a boxing scholarship will have high levels of achievement in boxing and will be offered the opportunity to train and develop at the MTC Nestor Sunshine Tobias Boxing & Fitness Academy. The scholarships are offered to both young women and men, as we aim to develop youth role models and future champions,” the academy added in a statement.
The academy offers various scholarships ranging from N$5 000 to N$25 000, which offer essential boxing fighting gear such as gloves, mouthguards, wraps, boxing shirts, shorts and training shoes, while the beneficiaries will also have access to the academy’s boxing and fitness equipment.
“For schoolgoing or university beneficiaries, the scholarship may be extended to supplement academic and school related costs,” the statement added.
The academy will organise and present various amateur boxing tournaments throughout Namibia on a monthly basis, culminating in the annual MTC Cup co-sponsored by PstBet in Grootfontein in November.
“Amateur boxers at this event stand an opportunity to win prizes such as medals, trophies, boxing gear and vouchers, while all participants will also be awarded a certificate of participation. The first round of the tournament is planned for Windhoek in July, while it will be held in various regions in Namibia with the support of the regional federations,” the statement added.
Tobias introduced a boxer profile and registration book for amateurs, where boxers will be able to record their fights and keep track of their boxing record and history.
The academy also plans to host training and coaching classes for those who are interested in coaching.
The academy announced their social responsibility drive, focussing on the welfare of society and the environment. The initiative is aimed at keeping children off the streets and engaging them in boxing and fitness related activities, while it provides mentoring to youth, life coaching and skills development and participation in various social activities.
According to the statement the academy organises clean-up campaigns within the community, while also giving back to needy members of society through charitable events.
“The academy encourages professional men and women who are positive role models to act as big brothers or big sisters, with the aim of encouraging the youth to focus on education, healthy choices and becoming aproductive citizen,” the satement added.
Regarding professional boxing, Tobias said that several professional Namibian boxers will be in action at an upcoming tournament in Harare, Zimbabwe on 30 June.
They include featherweight Matheus Heita, junior lightweights Onesmus Nekundi and Sebastianus Nathaneal, and welterweight Nestor Amukoto.
Tobias said that the academy will also present a boxing bonanza in Windhoek on 12 August, featuring 10 professional fights.
“Boxing fans have become accustomed to top quality boxing action, and this will be no exception as we promise another exciting and action-packed evening for boxing lovers,” he said.
