THE Eros Airport in the heart of Windhoek will again become an international destination for smaller aircraft by as early as the end of this year or early 2010 at the latest.
The small but convenient airport had been handling regional and international flights for decades but these were banned by Government in 2002 in order to promote the Hosea Kutako International Airport, 40 kilometres outside Windhoek.
Works and Transport Minister Helmut Angula responded to a question by Johan de Waal (DTA) in Parliament in Thursday. De Waal had asked when the ban would be lifted since it would be to the economic advantage of Namibia.
Minister Angula said his Office had received many enquiries from companies who would like to land and park their small jets at the airport.
Once new air traffic control equipment is installed at Eros Airport by the end of this year Eros could be opened for international flights again, Angula promised.
‘Government intends opening Eros Airport either this December or at the latest early 2010 as we expect a lot of traffic due to the Fifa soccer world cup taking place in South Africa next year,’ Angula emphasised.
He cautioned, however, that a city airport always poses a risk of plane accidents for nearby residents.
