A student nurse (26) was arrested on Friday after she allegedly threw her newborn baby inside a pit latrine at Engela village in the Ohangwena region.
National police spokesperson deputy commissioner Kauna Shikwambi in a report released on Sunday said the police are treating the case as one of attempted murder.
The suspect allegedly gave birth to a baby girl and threw her into
a deep latrine pit.
A family member then heard a baby crying from the pit and alerted the police.
“The baby was rescued by the police. Subsequently, the suspect was traced and is now under police guard at Oshakati hospital. Both the mother and the baby are in a
stable condition,” Shikwambi said.
Police investigations continue.
Meanwhile, the police in Kavango East region say a woman is suspected to have died after her canoe capsized following a hippo attack at Makena village on Friday.
The incident happened at around 09h00.
It is alleged that the woman (64), who’s name has not yet been released, was alone while fishing in a canoe in the river when a hippo attacked her. This caused the canoe to capsize,” the police report states.
She was further attacked while she was attempting to swim out of the water.
The police say the woman
then disappeared in the water and her body is yet to be retrieved.
