DEMANDING that Minister of Youth Willem Konjore come and listen to their demand for jobs, children of the liberation struggle who camped out at Swapo’s Oshana Regional Headquarters at Oshakati, yesterday staged a peaceful demonstration at the town.
Waving placards stating ‘Corruption down, we want jobs to reduce theft and poverty in Namibia’, ‘Leaders of the Government don’t eat up people’s money’, ‘We want education’ and ‘Down with those leaders who are not working in the peoples’ interest’, the more than 200 struggle kids, escorted by Police, marched to Oshakati’s Multipurpose Youth Centre where they handed a petition to the acting head of the centre, Sevirus Nashipili. In the petition, the struggle kids demanded to know how far Government, through the Youth Ministry, was in providing them with jobs and education opportunities, as well as demanding to scrutinise the registration list compiled by the Ministry. ‘Why did we register if the jobs we were promised seems to be not there?’ they wanted to know and requested Minister Konjore come and discuss with them their demands. In a separate interview, group leader Johannes Thomas told The Namibian that Oshana Swapo Co-ordinator, Erastus Uutoni, and Oshana Governor, Klemens Kashuupulwa, have prevented local business people from donating food and other basic necessities to the group. Uutoni responded yesterday, saying: ‘I never prevented business people or who else to give them food or other basic necessities. Never ever. I understood also that businessman Fillemon Moongo had given them food and that they had refused the food. I never told any businessman not to give them food.’oswald@namibian.com.na
