Strong winds damage Windhoek shacks

PAULINA NDALIKOKULEFAMILIES have been left with no shelter after their three shacks were destroyed when a tree was blown over by strong winds on Friday morning in Windhoek’s Dolam location.

Sandra Geniroman, a shack owner, revealed to that an old big tree from another yard was uprooted as a result of strong winds and fell on their shacks.

Goniroman is unemployed and is worried about her children’s shelter.

She said that it would be difficult to start from scratch.

“Where will we sleep? Where will I get the stationary of my children again because I am unemployed and I cannot afford to start over,” Geniroman said.

Wendy Morwe, who rents one of the destroyed shacks, said that they waited for the Windhoek municipal emergency services since morning to remove the tree.

However, by the time arrived on the scene on Friday afternoon they had still not been assisted.

“We need help even just to remove the tree from our roofs, then we can try to put things together again. The rain might come even tonight,” Morwe said.

The fire brigades had come to the scene earlier in the day, but did not have the right equipment to remove the fallen tree.

The City of Windhoek has however promised to remove the tree in due time.
